Certain compounds in Valerian, called Valerenic Acid and Valerenol, can act on GABA receptors in the body.
GABA is a chemical messenger that helps regulate nerve impulses in your nervous system. It is one of the main neurotransmitters responsible for sleep regulation, and increasing the amount of GABA available in your body has sedative effects [11].
Valerenic acid and Valerenol can modulate GABA receptors and increase the amount of GABA available in the central nervous system. Furthermore, research has shown that Valerenic Acid inhibits an enzyme that destroys GABA [12].

The botanical name for Valerian is Valeriana officinalis.
The Homegrown Valerian herbal extracts are made by extracting the essences of large quantities of fresh, clean, finely chopped, homegrown Valeriana officinalis root in Pharmaceutical Grade (99.7% pure) coconut oil glycerine.
The Valerian extracts from Certified Organic dried root are made by extracting the essences of large quantities of dried Valeriana officinalis root in a blend of 3 parts Pharmaceutical Grade (99.7% pure) coconut oil glycerine to 1 part distilled water.
The herb then macerates slowly in the solution over a 6 week period with daily agitation. Nothing else is added to the product. After the 6 week period the resulting extract is filtered to remove the plant material. The finished product is then allowed to settle (this reduces sediment in the finished product), and then is bottled and labelled by hand.
